Tivo, A Double Edged Sword
We have recently purchased an 80 hour Tivo unit and I find that it is having a strange effect on me. First let me say that I had a delusion that it would actually free up my time from watching television. What was I thinking? I find myself watching tv all the time now. Watching shows that I wished I had time for and watching shows I just can’t stay up for anymore. Playing games that I really don’t have time for and watching even more tv.
How is it that something that was supposed to save time can take up so much time. I’m not sure how that works or what type of physics it is manipulating, but it is happening nonetheless. I find we have so many shows stored and ready to watch that we need to set time aside just to watch them.
One thing I do like about Tivo is the pause feature. If someone calls or Aiden needs my attention, I can pause and not miss anything. No more saying, “What did he/she say?” or “Did you see that?”, I can just pause it or rewind and then fast forward through the commercials.
For anyone who is trying to get away from the television, this is not the way to go as you will spend at least twice the time in front of the tube. I find that between the television and the computer I am in front of a screen of some sort for most of the day, that is when I’m not in front of Aiden. I can’t wait until the weather breaks for good so I can get away from all these screens.
