New Sign?

Aiden has been trying to tell me something I’m convinced of it. He still doesn’t say many words and he can sign quite a bit, but I’m not sure if this type of communication fits into either of those categories. He has something to say though, I’m sure…

Aiden has started to grab my face and pull. Yes, he is scratching and hurting me, but I have to remember that he is little and cannot tell me what is on his mind. What could he possibly be trying to say to me with this type of action…

“Mommy, I am in a tremendous amount of pain with these new molars coming in, could you please help me?”

“Mommy, I am really pissed that you took me away from the sink where I was having such fun splashing in the water!”

“Mommy, your face is bugging me today.”

I just really don’t know what he is trying to say, but I hope this phase does not last very long, my face can’t take it!

The Signs Keep Coming

Today I want to share my excitement that Aiden is adding a new sign to his daily communications to me. He can sign “eat” which is very helpful to know if he is ready for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I get so excited when I see him trying to tell me things in this pre-verbal stage. Excuse me while I go give him another hug cause he just amazes me so!

If you would like to see how to sign “eat” or almost any other word you can think of you can visit the American Sign Language Browser and watch a video of how to sign the word you choose. Good luck!

The Plane! The Plane!

Aiden can sort of sign “airplane.” We live near a small airport and directly between (by many miles) two major airports, so we see and hear planes and helicopters at all hours of the day and night. Since the weather has been nice we have had the windows open and I noticed Aiden perking up every time he heard one fly over. I have also noticed that he can see them sometimes from our kitchen window during feedings. I have been trying to sign airplane whenever he notices and apparently he has noticed me doing so.

He can’t quite do the sign completely correct, as you need to bend your middle and ring fingers toward your palm and “fly” your hand above your head like an airplane. He takes his whole hand and “flies” it over his head – close enough for me! It is too cute because he is so proud of himself when he does it, not to mention I make a big fuss whenever he signs anything.

He now signs it when we take walks and he sees/hears one and also if he only hears the sound. When I point out a picture of a plane in a book and do the sign he immediately gets up and goes over to his window to try and find it in the sky. I mean, come on, how cute is that?!? I can’t say it enough times, but he never ceases to amaze me.

All Done!

Aiden just amazes me everyday. He has really started crawling, but only if there is something to crawl towards. What really amazed me today was when I was feeding Aiden his string beans for lunch, he apparently didn’t want any more and tried to sign finished while saying, “All done!” I wasn’t sure if he really said it or I was turning a sound into a word. However, I tried to give him another spoonful and he repeated both the action and the saying the word. He is our little genius.
