Basement Update

It has been four weeks since the construction on our basement has begun. It was a miracle we were able to clean it out completely (lots of stuff went to recycling, Good Will and in the garbage) as there was stuff in there we never went through before we moved here. It felt really go through it all and get rid of stuff (very cathartic), however we are now living with all that stuff tucked away in various nooks and crannies of the rest of the house. It is becoming a bit clausterphobic to me, but I am making do.

Anyway, my dad and Chris have been working so hard to get all the framing done. This weekend Chris has to complete it so we can get the electrician here. I would like to schedule him for next week so we can get all the necessary inspections before my dad can come back the first weekend in April. I feel like a foreman trying to keep the project on schedule, as I am becoming quite the pest reminding of the time limits we are under. I am very proud of Chris, as this is quite out of his comfort zone yet he is working very diligently and accomplishing most of the work himself.

I am hoping we can be completely done by Aiden’s birthday in May, but the real goal is to have it completed before the baby comes so we can move Aiden into his own room. We can’t do that at the moment as the computers are in the room we will be moving him. So, until the computers are moved into the basement, we can’t even get the furniture for Aiden’s new room. Now can you see why I’m such a pain about the time schedule? The baby is due July 8th, but the doctor has every confidence that I will have it at the end of June (Aiden was 2 weeks early). So, there is no time for dilly-dallying.

Why can’t we just do one thing at a time? Nooooo, we have to get pregnant, finish the basement and redecorate a room for Aiden. Sometimes I think we enjoy being under pressure and that just sounds crazy!

Squirrels?!?

Today the cool car (that’s what Aiden has dubbed the Odyssey) had to be towed to the Honda dealer. It is the second time in two weeks that the not-even-year-old-with-less-than-10,000-miles-on-it car had to be taken in for servicing. The first time the check engine light went on and they told me a mouse had chewed through some wire causing the light to go on. This week we were on our way to the grocery store and I noticed the car was unlocked and nothing happened when I tried to turn it on. I was mad too because we didn’t have much food in the house and I was craving something sweet.

So, instead of going to the store, Aiden and I waited for the towing company to come and take the car. I decided to check out under the hood to see if there was anything I could find (not that I know what I’m looking for, mind you). Well, much to my surprise, I did find something under the hood, something you would not normally find there - a nest! There were foot long sticks and balled up fuzzy stuff in the shape of a nest. Now, I know mice are good, but for those sticks to be there, it had to be an animal that had some muscle. I took pictures as I didn’t think that anyone would believe me.

The tow truck guy came and made me feel oh so good about the situation. He said that it was probably the battery as I had left the parking lights on. I assured him that I did not leave the parking lights on, but it was probably due to the fact that while I was trying to wrestle the car seat out of the back Aiden had been pushing buttons and pulling levers. I also should him the chewed up wires and nest under the hood. What do you think his response was? “Those wires are not chewed, they are just frayed.” Yes, that’s it, my girl brain must have gotten in the way of rational logic!
Later, I called the insurance guy to see if this was something that was covered under the policy as this was the second time this happened. We just couldn’t afford to have this keep happening every couple weeks, not to mention be down one vehicle. He had no idea if it was covered and then had the nerve to say that I must not look under the hood that often. I reminded him that this car was less than a year old and I didn’t think that it was necessary to do so. Did these men today think I was some stupid housewife who doesn’t know a thing about “manly” stuff? Let’s just say, I was not happy.

The thing that really annoyed me is that last fall Aiden and I would pile up the acorns in the back yard for the squirrels to find. Isn’t there a saying that one good deed deserves another? I guess no one told the squirrels.

Hooray for Haircuts

This may seem a bit silly, but I was so excited to go and get my hair cut this evening. The last time I was able to set foot in a salon was my birthday (yes, November). I had been so sick with the pregnancy that the thought of going into one made me dry heave.

So, once I started feeling better the first thing I did (besides rejoice) was schedule a hair appointment. I couldn’t be more happy with my stylist, who has been making me look the best I have in years. It took about half an hour, but it was so nice to get out and pamper myself.

For those of you who have regular appointments, please appreciate what you have. When you can’t get to go, you really miss something so routine. Hooray for Cookie (my stylist) and hooray for haircuts!

Back on Board

Well, I am finally feeling like a normal person again. At least as normal as someone who is growing a huge belly and appetite to boot. The good news is all the irrational anxieties I have been having have seemed to melt away (the rational anxieties are still there, but not as debilitating). I have a much happier outlook about this pregnancy and the expansion of our already wonderful family.

We have been talking up the baby more and more to Aiden and he is taking it fairly well. The other day I had him help me wash out his baby tub and we talked about how the baby will be taking a bath in it. I showed him pictures of when he was little in the tub and he was amused. Now all he talks about is giving the baby a bath in the baby tub - all by himself. Not sure if that’s the best idea, but he is excited about helping, so I haven’t burst his bubble just yet.

For those moms out that there who have to suffer the whole pregnancy not feeling well - I feel for you. I thought for sure that I would be one of them, but am completely grateful for the reprieve. It feels so good to be back on board the mommy bus.

Whew!

What a week. It started out with an ultrasound, 2 playdates and ended with a snow day. Let’s just say that I was ready for a pajama day, so it was about time it snowed.
Playdate number one was wonderful. Aiden had a fun time playing with autumn and Noah, such a good time in fact that we stayed well passed naptime. That was where I made my biggest mistake of the day. Aiden had a fit when we got home because his normal routine of watching a movie while I take a nap and then helping me make dinner was totally shot. He only had time to watch a measly PBS show and was devastated when Chris came home. After much screaming and crying, I was able to calm him down, get dinner ready and head out to work.

Playdate number two was not as successful. We thought Aiden and Justin would enjoy a fun time at the Uptown Playground (an indoor playground), boy were we wrong. Aiden wanted nothing to do with Justin and even pushed him when he sat in his seat. Not a good scenario when I really like the mom and had to apologize for my son’s behavior. No harm done though, once Aiden ate some lunch he warmed up to Justin and they were able to salvage some good playtime together. I made sure he had proper movie time before dinner, so no outbursts.

Sleeping is a novelty as Aiden has been waking up several times a night. Sometimes it’s 1-2 times and the other night it was at least 5 times. I think the last time I went a week having full nights sleep was before I was pregnant with Aiden. As I have mentioned in many a posts, I don’t do well with broken sleep. I’m trying to be patient with Aiden, but it is difficult with my current mood.

By today, I was thrilled that Chris had a day off due to the snow. About 6 inches fell over the course of the morning and I was shocked when Aiden did not want to go out and play. We realized that he has a stuffy nose and that could have attributed to his behavior this week. We had a fabulous day hanging out in our pajamas enjoying daddy being home. This was a really nice start to the weekend after a busy week.
